Lutheran Study Bible page

You will notice that above I have added a new page to this blog.  It is titled “Lutheran Study Bible”.  This page is dedicated to the on going review of this new resource released by Augsburg Fortress on March 1, 2009.  I have heard and read various comments about this Bible and wanted to have one place for people to go and get information.  Of course I understand that what I think is good or bad about this Bible may not line up with you…hence the comment section where we can have a conversation.  So I invite you to leave your reviews on various sections, notes, pages, etc that you really like or think are questionable.  I may miss some things as I go along and that’s because I am trying to read this devotionally and not as an editor, but I know various things will strike me from time to time.

Like I said, we may not agree but at least the information will be out there so people can go and make their own decision.  The Lutheran Study Bible page is going to be a work in progress for quite sometime and will be continually updated, so stop back often.

Lutheran Study Bible

I received my copy of the Lutheran Study Bible yesterday.  I pre-ordered my copy last year in anticipation of it’s release on March 1, 2009.   This study Bible was produced in connection with the Book of Faith initiative that was launched by the ELCA (Evangelical Lutheran Church in America).  I was mostly curious about what a “Lutheran” study Bible would contain so I placed my order.  And so far I must say that I am pleasantly surprised and pleased with what I have read.  So with these next couple posts I want to highlight some features in this study Bible.

Let me first say that this study Bible is BIG (2 1/4 inches thick).  It is this big because there is so much packed in there: useful resources, maps, articles, book introductions, and much more.  If you are fairly new to the Bible, this is going to be a great study Bible for you.  Even if you are a veteran Bible reader, there is something in here for you too (and “no”…Augsburg Fortress is not paying me to write this review).

Why am I so excited about this?  We live in a society that is becoming more and more Bible illiterate.  I am amazed at what people don’t know about the basic Bible stories.  I have encountered “Christians” who’s only knowledge of Moses is based on Charlton Heston’s portrayal of this great Old Testament hero.  Many people can’t say much if anything about Abraham, Moses, Noah, David or anyone else.  They may remember hearing those names in Sunday school, but that is it.  Somehow, someway, we need to get people interested in reading the Bible.  I have a young parishioner who said that she doesn’t attend Bible studies because she feels intimidated by those who know their Bible.  This shouldn’t be the case.

Will this study Bible solve all these problems?  I don’t know, but I think it is a start.  Whatever the case is…whether you get this study Bible or not…we need to get back into scripture.  Tonight, at my council meeting, I am going to talk to the crew about this study Bible and encourage them to get into  scripture.  Maybe we will order a bunch of study Bibles and read together…I don’t know…I will leave this up to the guidance of the Holy Spirit.

So with that I leave you with this question: What are your thoughts on the Lutheran Study Bible?

Jesus knows

Since, then, we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast to our confession. For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who in every respect has been tested as we are, yet without sin. Let us therefore approach the throne of grace with boldness, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need. (Hebrews 4:14-16)

That is my latest little nugget I came across through my Bible reading today.

Jesus has been there and done that.  Jesus knows what I am going through.  Jesus feels my pain and understands my struggles.  Jesus knows the fire I walk through and the raging flood waters that surround me.  Jesus knows the temptations I experience and hardships I face.  Jesus knows me AND you inside and out.  And with all this knowing and understanding, Jesus goes to the cross FOR YOU and FOR ME.  So therefore approach the throne of grace with boldness, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need. Wow…do I ever need that.

Praise be to God!!!

No tomorrow?

The saying is sure and worthy of full acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners–of whom I am the foremost. But for that very reason I received mercy, so that in me, as the foremost, Jesus Christ might display the utmost patience, making me an example to those who would come to believe in him for eternal life. To the King of the ages, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honor and glory forever and ever. Amen. (1 Timothy 1:15-17)

I read this passage this morning and it really caught my attention.  Therefore it got highlighted in my Bible.  Paul wrote this passage for Timothy as he was encouraging Timothy in his ministry.  And through that encouragement I also find encouragement.  Paul was the chief persecutor of the church; killing those that professed to believe and follow Jesus.  But God had other plans and called Paul to be a promoter and preacher of Christ.  Since then, Paul became the greatest missionary this Church has ever seen.

God, though Jesus Christ, came to save sinners which, in the words of Paul, he was the foremost.  God, through Jesus Christ, came to save sinners which I feel I am the foremost.  God, through Jesus Christ, came to save sinners which YOU are the foremost.  But for that very reason I/we received mercy, so that in me/us, as the foremost, Jesus Christ might display the utmost patience, making me/us an example to those who would come to believe in him for eternal life.

We are all the worst of sinners…but God’s mercy and forgiveness and love is so much greater.  This is our urgent message.  We can’t take this for granted.  Who, in your little world, needs to hear a message of hope?  Let our ministry be one that assumes no tomorrow.  If that is indeed the case…what are we waiting for?

Coffee shop ponderings — startled

Have you ever gotten yourself so focused on something that you didn’t hear someone approaching you…and when you finally noticed them or heard them you nearly jumped out of your shoes?  Well…that kind of happened to me today…not literally though.

I was in the sanctuary this morning working on my sermon as I do every Thursday morning before I leave for Coffee Choices.  When I returned to my office my secretary said, “Pastor, did you forget something?“  I immediately started searching my brain trying to figure out what she was talking about.  I got everything in for the bulletin and did all my usual Thursday stuff.  And then she said, “M called wondering where you are this morning“.  Then it hit me…it’s September…and it’s my month to lead Bible study at the apartment high rise and the assisted living facility.  And here’s the sad thing…I wrote about the fact (on this blog on Tuesday) that September is here and wondered where the summer went…and September still snuck up on me and “startled” me.  I called M and apologized and she understood.  I just hope my little old ladies forgive me.

September really is here.  I just hope I don’t forget anything else.

I have appreciated the discussion that has taken place around this “new” model for my church council and I want to highlight comments/suggestions that were submitted.  If you have any thoughts about encouraging a church council to be more mission minded please submit them.

Scripture
One thing that I suggested is that after the assigned council person for the month lead devotions, that I would lead the council in reading scripture; maybe the texts assigned for the upcoming Sunday.  Then Carolyn stopped by and suggested that after the first month of doing this I should encourage a pair of council people to lead the reading of scripture instead of the pastor doing it every month.  Scripture is something that all people are encouraged to engage and is something that anyone can read.  Carolyn is right.  Even though I did not intend to communicate that the pastor has be the one to read scripture the unwritten message was just that.  We are indeed the “priesthood of ALL believers”.

Prayer
Unlikely left a comment where he suggested starting the council meeting asking people what they are praying for.  At first people were a little hesitant, but after a few years Unlikely is filling up an 8 1/2 X 11 sheet of paper.  I believe this is also a great way to connect people with one another.  When you know what/who someone else is praying for, you get a glimpse of that person’s heart.  It also makes the assumption that everyone is praying (and as Christians we should be).
 
Then Eric left a comment just recently about prayer and scripture.  He said, ”Can you imagine the apostles of the early church getting together to make decisions without prayer and Scripture?“  That seems unheard of, yet we need to make an effort to include prayer and scripture more when we meet as a church council.  I have found that many people are just not comfortable praying in front of others, yet they are comfortable talking to their best friend.  I/We need to help people understand that prayer is not something that has to be done a certain way but rather it’s simply talking to your best friend.  Maybe this could be a devotional topic/discussion for an upcoming council meeting.  Maybe Unlikely’s suggestion about prayer will help here.

Coffee shop ponderings — God’s “good” plan

Here I am…posting my coffee shop ponderings from outside of Coffee Choices.  Actually…I never made it there today to write my sermon (I did make it there this morning for coffee though).  I usually start writing the sermon in my office and finish it at my coffee shop, but today was different.  I got on a roll and couldn’t stop typing.

On Sunday I am continuing my sermon series on Romans by preaching on chapter 8 verses 26-39.  I started pondering and praying about verse 28 where it says, “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.“  Upon pondering this verse I started thinking how this verse is often misused (or at least used in the wrong situations).  The times I have heard this verse used is when someone is facing a devastating disaster or disease diagnosis or something else devastating.  And in times like those, Romans 8:28 is the last verse I want to hear.  If I am mourning the lost of my house and possessions because of a tornado, quoting Romans 8:28 almost sounds like that God planned this disaster so he could do something “good”.  At the moment that is not comforting.  After the fact I may be able to look back and see the good that came from that disaster, but not right now.

I think this verse is used because of our insatiable desire to explain everything.  If we can’t explain it in scientific or logical terms we chalk it up to God’s divine plan (“I am not sure why this happened, but God is going to do something good thought it; it was God’s will.”)  Telling a parent, who’s child just died, that it was God’s will is often not the right thing to say.  Or trying telling them that God will do something good though that death.  You might get an angry response in return.  But who knows how they will look at death later on down the road.

Instead, I see Romans 8:28 as a proclamation of grace.  The “good” God is working towards is nothing else than our reconciliation through Jesus Christ.  Ever since the Fall, God has been working to reconcile creation back to himself.  And it is only though faith that we can recognize this “good”.  Sometimes the “crap” of this world can cloud our faith so we cannot see God active in our lives.  But after the dust clears, then things begin to clear up.

In a simple phrase, quoted by a friend of mine on Facebook, “It’s all grace!”  And that is so true.  God IS working for good, but let’s be careful how and when we use this verse.  We might do more harm than good.  Instead, share with people how God has gotten you thought difficult times.  Talk about God’s amazing love and how he never left you when you were going to a tough time.  Let people see the “good” for themselves after the dust has cleared.

“Vacation”

I am on vacation…

…but not really.  As Christians we are never really on vacation, but as for pastoral duties I am on vacation…

…well…not really.  I went down to my favorite coffee shop to enjoy some time away from my cell phone and visited with a group of ladies (one of which is from Salem).  One of the ladies in that group is recovering from back surgery and is still in some pain.  I guess some pastoral care was taking place.

After that group left I made my way over to another group of ladies to say "Hi".  They had just finished a Bible study at their church.  They noticed a saying on my shirt that had a Bible verse attached to it and wanted to know what it meant.  I couldn’t remember so one lady pulled out a Bible and I looked up the verse.  I guess a mini bible study took place.

On vacation?  I guess that is a very subjective word because Christians should never be on "vacation". 

And what will tomorrow hold for me…on my "busy" vacation?  I will be looking forward to spending some more "vacation" time down at the coffee shop.

Deviled Ham

I just had to share this with you…

…I was visiting this exegetical web site I visit quite often for sermon prep called CrossMarks Christian Resources.  If you page down a little bit to "Other Resources" there will be a link to exegetical notes on the lectionary.  I then found the Gospel text for today and this is what I found in the opening paragraph:

"…this is the one shot the lectionary preacher has of saying, ‘This is the first reported case of deviled ham."  (Of course this is the reference to Jesus driving out the demon from a man into a herd of pigs)

I don’t know about you but I laughed out loud when I read that.  That line could be a good sermon opener this Sunday.  If not a sermon opener then you could use it as a fun Bible fact to open a conversation…an ice breaker.

On a serious note…check out CrossMarks sometime.  There is a lot of good information for Bible study and sermon prep plus other resources.  The author of the site is a former pastor in Minnesota but now is a professor at Lutheran Theological Seminary Gettysburg.
